Charles Darwin said, “A man who dares to waste an hour of time has not discovered the value of life”.

So follow in his footsteps and check the Galapagos Islands off your bucket list. Keep reading for 5 reasons why heading to a Galapagos beach is the ultimate island getaway.

1. You’ll Never Forget a Galapagos Beach

Where else in the world can you catch some rays while iguanas and penguins are roaming around?

Tortuga Bay is a popular oasis-like beach to head to. Although it is quite a trek to get down to the white sandy beaches, it’s worth it. The jungle walk itself is an adventure with chances of spotting lizards, tropical birds, and luscious flora.

Wizards Hill (or Cerro Brujo) is one of the most luxurious Galapagos island beaches you’ll find. Not only can you spend the day getting a suntan, but you can encounter a wide array of wildlife.

The wizard hat shaped bay was one of the first landing spots of Darwin. You may even be able to spot pelicans, manta rays, sea lions and an abundance of bird life.

Another tranquil beach to visit is El Garrapatero Beach. Mangrove trees surround the white sands and aqua ocean. This perfect setting attracts all kinds of bird life. From herons and mockingbirds to flamingoes and penguins, you really are spoilt for choice.

2. The Wildlife is Spectacular

The animals in the Galapagos Islands have grown up with zero fear of humans. Because of this, you can enjoy personal interactions with a variety of extraordinary creatures. This makes it a dream vacay for animal lovers.

Hang with the iguanas on lava rocks. Paddleboard alongside reef sharks. Or surf with the sea lions!

The Santa Cruz Islands Southern coastline is the perfect place to spend some quality time with incredible marine turtles. From January to February you may see them laying their eggs. In May, you can see the little hatchlings making their way to the ocean.

Even if you’re not that interested in turtles, there are cute marine iguanas and Sally Lightfoot crabs to keep you company.

One of the most well-known creatures in the Galapagos Islands is the Giant Tortoise. There are animal sanctuaries in El Chato you can visit to see them up close.

The Galapagos islands are a twitchers paradise. Bird watchers from around the world grab their binoculars and become astounded at their findings. The region actually has 45 bird species that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.

Galapagos penguins, Darwin’s finches, frigate birds, and swallowtail gulls are easy to spot. And waved albatrosses, blue and red-footed boobies are all found fluttering around the islands.

3. It’s a Snorkeling Paradise

The abundant wildlife is not restricted to the land. Beneath the turquoise ocean, a whole new world is ready to explore. So grab your snorkel mask, you’re in for a treat.

In the crystal clear waves, you have a visibility of up to 100 feet! You may spot hammerhead sharks, sea lions, turtles, marine iguanas, sea horses, garden eels, and an array of tropical fish.

The islands of Las Tintoreras include a variety of natural habitats formed from lava formations. For instance, there is a lagoon which is a favorite spot for reef sharks, and sea lions to lay low.

Wolf Island’s Shark Point is a spectacular dive site for experienced divers. But for novices, Las Grietas, Isla Lobos, Los Tuneles, and Frigatebird Hill are great choices for snorkeling.

Whether you’re a diver or a snorkeling enthusiast, you can’t miss the Canal del Amor (aka. the Love Channel). The two mountainous rock formations lie far out from the shore. The natural channel that lies between attracts all kinds of spectacular sea life, which makes it an awesome spot for snorkeling.

4. It’s a Real Adventure Destination

Many of the Galapagos Islands beaches feature views of active volcanoes. Yes, ACTIVE (it really is an adventure destination). You can even hike up active volcanoes and see the glowing lava smoothly churning itself.

Sierra Negra Volcano is a majestic formation that rises 4,500 feet over Isabela Island. The crater is one of the largest on the planet at a diameter of 6+ miles. After a glorious, yet challenging trek up the volcano, you can peep inside.

But don’t worry! Seismologists keep a watchful eye over all eruption zones. And you cannot visit without a guide.

If you don’t fancy the trail by foot, you can always go on horseback from Santo Tomas. Or go urban and hail a taxi from Puerto Villamil.

As well as trekking upwards, you can also go on a downward trail. Explore the Lava Tunnels. It’s like caving, but instead of rock, the tunnels have formed from hardened lava.

5. You Can Learn A Lot

As well as natural wonders, you should also take a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station. This world-famous site includes an active breeding center. Their aim is to preserve the diversity of the Galapagos Islands.

Through the many exhibits, displays, and videos, you can learn about their research and conservation efforts. There is also a charming gift shop and cafe. You will additionally find several friendly giant tortoises roaming around the premises.

Whether you’re a budding scientist or not, the Charles Darwin Research Station is an educational delight for all.
