Australia’s Best Road Trips You Should Experience

January 29, 2019

The best way to explore Australia is through an awesome road trip. Listing down popular destinations and going there is well and good, but there are towns in between point A and B, key places of interest not a lot of people know of that you are going to miss out.

You’ll see that there’s nothing like being in a camper van with friends, jamming on some tunes, while see the great outback. So here are the best road trips to take on your big Australian road trip.

Tropical North Queensland Trip

This is one of the most popular road trips to take because it mostly happens near the coast and will take you to some of Australia’s most impressive natural landmarks.

This route starts in Cairns and goes all the way to Cape York and features two World Heritage areas. First is the Great Barrier Reef, a 2,600-kilometre ecosystem considered to be the largest living on Earth visible from outer space. It is composed of 2,900 individual reefs, stretches to 900 islands, and thousands of species of fish, birds, ascidians, and other marine life living on it.

Another iconic site is the Daintree Rainforest. At 1,200 square kilometres, it is the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest in Australia. Its ancient ferns and lush surroundings has inspired James Cameron’s films Avatar, and the forest itself has been described by natural historian Sir David Attenborough as “the most extraordinary place on earth.” You can go on a trek to see flora and fauna you wouldn’t see anywhere else.

The Big Lap

From taking a tour through Australia’s natural wonders, let’s take it up a notch and take on one of the greatest routes in the country. The Big Lap is 15,000 kilometres of road which will take you to seven major cities, namely: Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Broome, Perth, Esperance, Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart.

For this road trip, you will be taken from the big, vibrant cities of Sydney, to thick rainforests, beautiful coastline, dusty red outback, and the quaint towns. This will take more or less six months, so make sure you allot time for this road trip.

Look out for Lake Hiller in Esperance. A saline lake known for its vibrant pink hue, mostly due to the salt content in the water. It is right beside the Pacific Ocean, so you can clearly see the contrast between the two. In Hobart, make sure you take a food or cafe crawl because the town has some of the best artisan dining options and must-try hole-in-the-wall restaurants.

Great Ocean Road

Lastly, relax and take a breather on this Great Ocean Road trip. This will take you to some of Australia’s most picturesque white-sand beaches and campsites. You will drive a 250-kilometre stretch which will show you the limestone rocks of The Twelve Apostles jutting out of the ocean to the beached of Loch Ard Gorge.

As a tip, don’t try to fit everything in one day. The Great Ocean Road also offers wildlife, hiking activities, and remote beachside towns which you will only get to see if you take your time with it. You will start in Torquay, Melbourne and drive all the way to Warrnambool, Victoria.

So what are you waiting for? Get a map, choose your route, book your campervan here, and prepare yourself for an epic Outback journey.
