Have you decided to move house? We’ve all been there. That exciting time when you’re not just selling your old house but you feel as if you’re about to move onto a whole new part of your life. Getting the right home is important now that homeworking looks set to become commonplace.
But when the big day finally arrives what are the things to do when moving into a new house? Here’s everything you need to know about your new home checklist.
1. Check the Attic
You need to check the attic to see if there’s anything in it. Perhaps the last owners left some items behind. You need to decide if you are going to return them or keep them for yourself.
You also need to decide if the attic is suitable for conversion. You might want to invest some money and time in transforming it into a liveable space. This can be a great side project.
2. Transfer Bills
Bills are complicated things. They might still be in the name of your old owner and the transfer date might not coincide with the date of the bill period.
You must, therefore, arrange with the previous owners or tenants about transferring the bills to your name and to decide between you how to split the cost of the fist bill period.
One option is to work out what the previous owners owe and have them sent that to you. If you don’t feel comfortable giving out your bank details you could use PayPal or you could use a digital bank that offers a payment link system. Other users can just pay using their debit cards. Or they could just write you a check, the old fashioned way.
3. Transfer Mail
Another annoying aspect of moving house is having your mail transferred to your new house and the mail of the previous owners transferred to their new address. Set this up even before you’ve started looking or a moving company like – innercitymoving.ca – to help you transport all of your belongings to your new home. You can even use the app Yoti to help you move home.
Although the previous owners are in charge of transferring their old mail you could agree to hold onto this for them if they have moved just a short distance away.
However, if they have moved far away then you might want to suggest to them that they get the post service to rearrange it for them. In the meantime, you could place all of their mail into a special delivery post bag for them provided they pay. You could also ask the new owners of your home to show you the same courtesy.
