March 10, 2021

Your toilet is an essential part of your home. It’s connected to your plumbing system, allowing it to work effortlessly and dispose of your waste products. In most cases it’s simply out of sight, out of mind.

However, when things go wrong with your toilet you’ll suddenly appreciate how important and neglected it is. Your first reaction may be to call a reputable Sydney emergency plumbing firm. This is a good idea as they have the expertise to resolve any issue for you quickly.

However, you should also be aware of the most common toilet problems which you can fix yourself. If you’re new to this keep the number of the emergency plumber handy, you may still need them.

Toilet Keeps Running

When the water keeps running into your toilet at all times of the day and night you’ll find that your water bill quickly creeps upward. The good news is that a constantly running toilet is usually a simple issue.

It may be that the float inside your cistern is not rising properly. When this reaches a certain height it tells the water to stop filling the cistern. You can adjust the float to ensure it stops the water before it overflows into the toilet.

This can also be an issue with the flapper at the bottom of the cistern. This prevents water from getting through into the toilet until you operate the flush. If the seal is damaged then the water will run constantly. You’ll need to replace the seal or the entre cistern unit.

Toilet Won’t Flush

The flush handle or button is a very simple part of the process. You pull the lever or push the button and it moves the flapper at the bottom of the cistern, allowing the water through.

In most cases the toilet not flushing is simply a matter of the handle being disconnected.  Take a look inside the cistern and ensure the lever or button I properly connected. When operated it should lift the flapper.

Water Leaks

This won’t usually affect the operation of your toilet. However, they will waste your water and cause damage to your bathroom. The water can be leaking from the supply pipe or from the waste side. That means you should put gloves on to protect yourself.

You’ll need to locate the source of the leak and then decide whether you can repair it or replace it or not. If it’s beyond your current skill level don’t be ashamed to get the professionals in, that’s what they are here for!

Blocked Toilets

Blocked toilets are generally caused by items being put down the toilet that shouldn’t be. This includes sanitary products, wet wipes, and kids toys.

If the toilet is clogged you’ll need a toilet plunger to attempt to dislodge the blockage. Failing that, a toilet argur can do the trick. If neither of these work it’s possible to use a chemical unblocker or call the plumber to take the pipes apart and eliminate the blockage.
